THE ROLE OF PHYSIOTHERAPY IN THE MANAGEMENT OF POST-CONCUSSION SYNDROME
By Manon Circé, Physiotherapist

Did you know that almost 20% of adults who have suffered from a concussion do not fully recover within the first month?

The common and sometimes debilitating signs and symptoms of Post-Concussion Syndrome are headaches, poor coordination, loss of balance, dizziness, blurred vision, fogginess, memory problems, sensitivity to light and/or noise, neck pain, decreased concentration, and fatigue.

The topic of concussions in professional and recreational sports is currently undeniably prevalent in the media. It has brought increased awareness to the condition that we now call Post-Concussion Syndrome.

Post-Concussion Syndrome can be defined as a constellation of non-specific signs and symptoms caused by microstructural white matter trauma of the brain resulting from a deforming stress.

Concussion research has increased dramatically over the last 10 years. Based on recent data, most concussed adults’ symptoms resolve within 7-10 days. The trauma to the brain affects many systems: the visual system (processing), the inner ear (vestibular system), the neck (cervical spine), balance (sensory integration), blood pressure, heart rate and the awake-sleep cycle (autonomic system). Functionally, these symptoms can really impact an individual’s ability to walk, read, drive, work, study, socialize and be in public spaces.  Due to the persistent symptoms, feelings of isolation, depression and anxiety are often reported.

If any symptoms persist past the 1 month mark, treatment should be sought. Physiotherapy has been identified as having an integral role in the management of Post-Concussion Syndrome. Specialized Physiotherapists evaluate these various systems and their interactions. While the brain continues to heal, a Physiotherapist can treat and manage the constellation of persistent Post-Concussion Syndrome symptoms and encourage new connections within the brain. By prescribing proper training exercises, education and with hands on techniques, symptoms will diminish and resolve gradually.
