At Life Therapies we see and treat a number of orthopaedic conditions, including TMJ Dysfunction.
Our TMJ Physiotherapy Treatment Approach involves reducing muscle tone and improving movement, strength, postural awareness while reducing pain through specific manual therapy mobilizations to the TMJ and spine, soft tissue release, individualized home exercise program, acupuncture, dry needling, BioFlex Laser, ultrasound, and education on posture, ergonomics, and activity modifications.
Our Osteopathic Treatment Approach involves gentle manual therapy techniques to remove any soft tissue restrictions affecting the TMJ and the postural lines of gravity. We also balance the vertebral column through osteoarticular and myofascial techniques. Gentle mobilizations are performed on the TMJ and cranial bones to balance the fascial system of the head. Lastly, education on posture ad body mechanics are recommended.
Our Massage Therapy Approach uses soft tissue techniques to relieve pain, decrease swelling, increase circulation, normalize tone of the muscle, increase range of motion, aid in relaxation, and increase the overall wellbeing of the individual.
Our Acupuncture Treatment Approach is based in Vietnamese Acupuncture. Khoi Vu, Registered Acupuncturist provides acupuncture, acupressure, cupping and moxibustion to help reduce pain, calm the nervous system and stimulate the bodies’ own healing response.
Results from a 2007 study in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies found that massage therapy techniques were effective at improving TMJ range of motion and reducing the intensity and frequency of TMJ pain without surgical or pharmacological intervention.
Initial referrals can be made to one of our Physiotherapists. The Physiotherapist will recommend that clients with complex cases and/or facial asymmetries receive adjunctive Osteopathic treatment. TMJ dysfunctions with significant muscle hypertonicity will benefit from being seen by our Registered Massage Therapist, and any conditions with a more severe pain component and/or stress component will be recommended to see our Acupuncturist.
