The female body undergoes an incredible transformation – both physiological and anatomical – during pregnancy. While the changes to the female body are natural and necessary to accommodate the growing fetus, many women report a variety of “strange” sensations or unexpected responses during pregnancy. This week, the team at Life Therapies looks at one such area and explores the benefits of Osteopathic Advice and Treatment for Pregnancy-Related Headaches and Neck Pain.
1st, 2nd and 3rd Trimester Headaches and Neck Pain
During the first trimester, it is not uncommon for women to experience headaches. The body is changing at such a rapid pace and the drastic increase in hormones and blood volume can contribute to frequent headaches.
As a woman nears the end of the 1st trimester, posture, a change in vision and stress can start to play a role. In some cases, women will report sudden neck pain, while others will report irregular to frequent headaches. In many cases, the foundation for both neck pain and headaches lies in the growing abdominal “baby bump” and its resulting posture changes.
In essence, as the abdominal bump grows larger, the upper back begins to round in response. This posture change leads to a forward projection of the head. While it might appear harmless, this ever-so-slight change can cause unwanted pain in the upper back and neck. Over time, a stiffness can set in and the muscles in the back and neck can tighten up, thus leading to tension headaches. Certainly not something any mama-to-be wants to experience.
