The Registered Massage Therapists at Life Therapies utilize an array of massage therapy techniques and tools to assist clients of all ages. The following is a list of the most common methods used, along with descriptions to provide a general overview.
SWEDISH MASSAGE
Swedish massage is the most well-known and popular of the massage therapy techniques. It involves a variety of elements including long strokes, friction, petrissage (kneading), percussion, tapping, vibration, shaking, and effleurage motions. These motions can be mild, moderate or deep, depending on the parts of the body being targeted for maximum relief from pain, release from stress and overall relaxation.
Swedish massage therapy is an excellent choice for those wishing to ease back pain and promote healthy healing throughout the body.
DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE
Similar to Swedish massage, Deep Tissue massage therapy uses a deeper pressure to target the innermost layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia. The technique is popular amongst athletes and those seeking relief from chronic conditions. Deep tissue massage is also unique, in that it helps promote the healing of scar tissue and provides pain relief to those suffering from soft tissue injuries.
HOT STONE MASSAGE
Melt away tension, soothe your muscles and increase your circulation with a hot stone massage.
Silky smooth, water-heated stones are placed on key points of the body, encouraging the muscles to relax. This relaxation allows our therapists better access the deep muscle layers.
Hot stone massage is said to be one of the most relaxing forms of massage – thanks to the warm, soothing and sedative-like effect. Benefits of hot stone massage include improved flexibility in the joints and relief from pain associated with arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia and other chronic conditions.
TRIGGER POINT RELEASE
A trigger point is an area in the body that produces referral pain in another part of the body. Trigger point release massage therapy addresses the source of the pain through isolated pressure and release. Our therapists will ask for feedback during the trigger point release, to ensure the exact location of the pain is identified and addressed. This results in the release of constricted areas within the muscles, with major improvements typically noted after just one treatment.
Trigger point release is an excellent method for managing tension, stress and pain from chronic injuries.
ACUPRESSURE
Not to be confused with Acupuncture, Acupressure is an ancient Chinese healing method. Our therapist will use very gentle, yet firm, finger pressure on the meridian points of the body. In working with the meridian (trigger) points, the body’s tension is released and blood circulation is improved.
Acupressure therapy is excellent for relieving pain associated with injury or trauma, headaches, backaches, neck pain, insomnia and overall exhaustion and burnout. Often clients will note after one session they have an improved feeling of well-being and an increase in energy levels.
LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE
Lymphatic Drainage, also commonly known as lymphatic massage or manual lymph drainage, is a technique used in the treatment of lymphedema. Lymphedema is an accumulation of fluid which often occurs when lymph nodes have been damaged or removed by cancer treatment.
Lymphatic drainage is very gentle and follows the structure of the lymphatic system. Our therapists use light strokes, rubs, or taps on the skin, thereby draining the accumulated lymph fluid through the proper channels.
