A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a direct or indirect blow to the head. A concussion cannot be seen on X-ray, CT scans or MRI.
Concussions can cause a broad range of physical and psychological symptoms, affecting the whole person. Some symptoms may appear immediately after the trauma, while others may be delayed.
Some common symptoms of a concussion are:
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Memory issues
- Difficulties concentrating
- Nausea
- Sensitivity to light and/or sounds
- Blurry vision
- Dizziness
- Moodiness / Irritability
- Sleeping more or less than usual
- Balance problems
In some cases, the concussion symptoms resolve by themselves, but sometimes the symptoms can remain present and debilitating for a long period of time.
A concussion can cause a dysfunction in the mobility of the cranial bones and in other affected regions of the body, causing a wide variety of symptoms. The osteopathic philosophy recognizes that small alterations can influence the whole body.
As the symptoms remain, the body tries to compensate and this can eventually lead to a general sensation of discomfort.
As osteopathic manual practitioners, we can facilitate recovery from a concussion. Our role is to correct restrictions and imbalances within the body in order to restore optimal health.
At your visit with an osteopathic manual practitioner at Life Therapies, we will collect a thorough history and perform a physical examination. A gentle hands-on approach will be used to address restriction in bones, tissues and fluids. The whole body will be considered to correct all compensation patterns . We are also highly trained in Craniosacral Therapy, which is a very gentle and subtle type of approach which has been shown to be particularly efficient at helping to resolve post-concussion symptoms.
