Osteopathy
Osteopathic Treatment
‘As a natural medicine, osteopathy applies the knowledge of the structure (anatomy) and function (physiology) of the body, to all diseases, disorders and dysfunctions. The tools osteopaths use are their hands. Osteopaths use a gentle “hands-on” or “manual” approach to identify the causative factor of the problem and restore order to all of the systems: musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, reproductive, or nervous system’ (Ontario Association of Osteopaths).
The primary foundation of osteopathy is to make you as an individual healthier. Treatment is not just focusing on anatomy and physiology but how that anatomy and physiology fit into the whole being. Addressing the individual as a whole includes integrating the mind, body, and spirit. Each component has to function in a system that is interdependent on all other systems. Osteopathy will look at the causes of dysfunction, understanding its interconnectedness, and removing all barriers that impede health. To be healthy, one has to consider the entire individual (mind, body, and spirit), the environment (both internal and external), and the stresses that influence the individual. In doing so, one can optimize and enhance their health.
Health, in its totality, functions with the whole individual within an environment (both internal and external) with pressures and stresses that can allow the individual to strive and excel. The Osteopath will consider and influence all aspects of health. This in turn will optimize health of the individual leading to an enhanced life.
