What is Massage Therapy?

Massage Therapy is the art and science of treating the body through massage techniques. These techniques are directed at the soft tissue of the body, which create an effect on the body’s musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, neurological, and gastrointestinal systems. The goal of massage therapy is to prevent, maintain, rehabilitate or improve physical function and to relieve pain.

How can a massage therapist help?

The therapist will adapt the pressure, direction, rhythm, rate, duration, and location of treatment to the body according to the body’s needs.

Expected outcomes include:

  • Pain relief
  • Decrease swelling
  • Increase circulation
  • Normalize tone of the muscle
  • Increase range of motion
  • Relaxation
  • Increase overall wellbeing

Paediatric Massage Therapy

Children have their own special health care needs. Which is why Paediatric Massage Therapy is highly regarded as a treatment that provides infants, children and youth with positive and nurturing touch. By addressing bodily impairments, including muscle pain, growth pains, sleep disturbances, and other discomforts, a paediatric massage therapist can also use touch to promote increased brainwave activity, relaxation and improved sleep.

At the Life Therapies clinic in Ottawa, RMT Dawn Ham specializes in working with infants and children. Dawn offers a 35 minute massage therapy session for children 6 years of age or younger. Parents will be asked to accompany any child 6 and under in the treatment room. For children 7 years of age and older, Dawn recommends a 50 minute session. While parents of older children do not have to remain in the treatment room, parents will be required to remain on-site for the duration of the massage.
